CASSIE FANNIN

  • When did you start your riding career?

    • I started when I was 12. I wanted to do what my family had done. My grandmother was a champion barrel racer in New York where she use to live. I currently wear her championship buckle from 1960-she won this buckle on her horse "Jumper." I haven't earned a buckle of my own yet to finally retire hers.

  • When was your first rodeo/barrel race?

    • First barrel race was in 2006 at the Waddly Saddle Club in Waddy, KY. I rode my walking horses in the show and turned around and ran barrels.

  • Do you have career highlights?

    • My highlight has to be this past nationals. I won 5th in 3D in the 2018 KYIBRA and received news that Striking KMA Performance Horses wanted to sponsor me. This is a huge highlight due to the fact I have never won at a big competition nor been sponsored before!!!

  • Do you have a favorite horse?

    • Favorite horse is a hard one, each horse I have had of course holds a special place in my heart and they have all made me into a better rider and the rider I am today. If I have to choose a favorite it would be "Dixie." This was the first horse to really push me over my fears of barrel racing.

  • Who do you look up to the most in the horse industry?

    • Everyone I look up to in the horse industry has helped me along my journey and I couldn't pick just one person-they all deserve recognition! First and foremost my mom, grandma and grandpa-I also look up to Diana Drury, Barbara Wakefield, Kelly Alley, Kelly Hicks, Cecelia Taylor, Kim de Giovanni, Lydia de Giovanni, Emma Wilson, Emily Westfall, and so many more!

  • What are your professional goals for the future?

    • My biggest goal is to better myself! I want to beat my old times, improve on my skills and NEVER give up on what I love to do!! I would love to be in the top ranks one day but if that never comes I would be pleased to just be a better me.

  • Any advice for those starting out in the industry of rodeo/barrel racing?

    • When you feel like giving up-SPURS ON!! I came from nothing and now I am here! I took on a 3 yr old non-broke horse and a 2 yr old non-broke horse and turned them into 1-2D horses that could do anything. It is all in what you put into your dream! If you don't push everyday you will not succeed. It is up to you and no one else to make your dreams come true.

  • Do you have an inspirational quote, saying or scripture that you live by or use to motivate you?

    • "Live everyday like tomorrow isn't promised. Push everyday for no one will hand it to you. Dream big and NEVER say you can't do it!"

  • Do you have any pre-game rituals you do before a rodeo/barrel race? Or lucky charms you keep or wear with you?

    • I honestly just wing it! Every ride wing it

    • I also dance a little in my saddle along with sing before I run, I disappear from the world for a moment

    • Practice so when the time comes you can wing it :)

I always ride with an over and under, which I never used to do, but guess it gives us that extra push :)
